Summertime

Now that the Hawks have been in humiliated by the Celtics in Game 7 which led to the end of two weird weeks for Atlanta, from the sixteen teams which started the playoffs, only eight are remaining. I wrote a first-round preview, but couldn’t do that for the second round. Why? Because the second round already started on Saturday night, while the Celtics still had to get rid off those pesky Hawks. So instead of writing a preview, let’s take quick look to those eight teams who are gone, but not forgotten.

East

Atlanta Hawks: They are so inconsistent. Gave the Celtics all they could handle, so that must mean this team is capable of way more than they have shown so far. If young guys start to use their heads slightly more than rely on their athleticism, they will be in the playoffs again next year, and might even win a round. I’m really impressed by Al Horford, and one of the keys to a better season than they had now is Mike Bibby. Because although the Joshes, Marvin and whoever need to think a little bit more, Bibby and backcourt partner Joe Johnson have to lead them in the right direction.

Philadelphia 76’ers: Gave the Pistons some trouble, even when Iggy wasn’t playing well. Dr. Dre Miller is the perfect leader for this team, and still a very, very good point guard. Thaddeus might be Young, and so is Louis Williams but in a couple of years these two might be the stars of the Sixers. Dalembert might be overpaid, but had a good season for them (he and Evans on the boards are a nice combo to have), which leaves us to Iguodala. I have a feeling that this is his Gillette moment. The best a man can get. He’s good, but can he get better, or has he reached the ceiling? The Sixers are a team without true starts, until Iguodala becomes one.

Toronto Raptors: It didn’t surprise me that the Magic won. The Raptors haven’t been playing well for months. The trade rumors are already starting, mentioning New Jersey Net Richard Jefferson going there to provide some help. I think talent isn’t the issue with the Raptors, but as I said many times before, it’s mentality. Maybe Sam Mitchell’s coaching ways aren’t working anymore, or maybe it’s just all between the players’ ears. But they have some great players, who provided some magic of their own against Orlando. They just disappeared.

Washington Wizards: When Arenas is saying that the Wizards might be a better team without him, can be considered a trade request? Last season and this one the Wizards weren’t healthy for the playoffs. I would like to see them make one more run. That’s all I can say about that. I heard some stuff a while ago that Antawn Jamison might not be there next season, but I certainly hope that isn’t the case. He and Caron Butler are just as important as a healthy Arenas. One more run to see what these guys can really do. Mason and Blatche can only get better, and the only thing the Wizards might benefit from is a quality rebounder. And for Deshawn Stevenson to shut up.

West

Denver Nuggets: This is the only team I don’t know what to say about. Rumors say that Marcus Camby will be traded. Why? Because he was the Defensive Player of the Year one season ago? Who are they trading him for? Good shotblockers are hard to find, so good luck with that. I’m happy for George Karl that he will be back next season, he seems like a good guy. But I wonder how far he can take them. If they do make a change, I hope they take a look at Paul Silas. Other than that, I have no idea what should happen in Denver, besides the fact that they should play some defense. Simple as that.

Dallas Mavericks: Mark Cuban’s got more problems than R. Kelly. What they have in common? They created those problems themselves and can’t keep it on the down low. It’s out in the open, because the trade for Jason Kidd has yet to prove to be a good one. I still believe Kidd can lead the Mavericks to another good regular season, but his quest for a championship will end on a sour note. There is no way in hell Dallas will win a championship with their current roster, and the West will even be better next season. Besides Josh Howard and Brandon Bass, who are the other players on the team who have some improvement left? Besides those two, it’s a team without a future, and part of their future is ballin’ in Jersey.

Phoenix Suns: Same problem as the Mavs, somewhat. They want to win now, but now doesn’t seem to happen, and getting older is. Now what? The window of winning titles is faster than Barbosa can sprint down the court. I believe Nash still has enough in the tank to be a top point guard, but he still can’t defend. Shaq is old, wise, but still old. He’s an asset because the star of the team, Amare Stoudemire, is playing his natural position again, and is more dangerous than ever. But let’s be honest here: there are too many teams who can beat the Suns in the playoffs right now, and they are not only named “Spurs”. Can you imagine the Suns beating the Hornets or Lakers right now? The Jazz? I’m not sure, and what’s also not sure if coach Mike D’Antoni will be back next season. I wonder how this team will respond to another coach.

Houston Rockets: Good team, good players, but a very difficult year lies ahead with teams like the Blazers on the come-up. You can always ask “what if?”, because what if Yao Ming was healthy? I think the Jazz would still have beaten them. Luis Scola should start 82 games next season, they have a decent bench and a great starting five. But will they get past the first round next year? Is it, or isn’t it T-Mac’s fault? Is Adelman the one to blame? And the most important question of this summer will be: how old is Dikembe Mutombo really anyway?

you think Kidd can make the hall of fame without winning a championship? it doesn't seem likely that he'll win one.

Kidd can make the HOF without a title. He may be shit now, but he was the top PG in the league in the early 2000's.

What about them Hornets?

robbz18 said...

Kidd surely would. By the way, this wasn't T-Mac's fault at all. Houston is just that unlucky.

Gerard, dude. Just posted something new over on my blog! Check it out!

BTW, where the hell is Paul Silas?

I think like what was posted on the hoopshype forum, it might just be the start of a change in the future... Most of the teams that are in the playoffs right now will go and age down three years from now and teams like atlanta, philly and no are surely competitors in the nex few years... if that happens then look out...

-Gerard Himself- said...

Mel, absolutely, and let's not forget about the Blazers!

And about Jason Kidd: yes, I think he will be in the HoF one day, and I still believe he can make the Mavs better after they have a full training camp together. But I know one thing for sure: they won't make the Finals next season with this team. This is not enough, and that proved to be right, as we've seen so far.

-Gerard Himself- said...

Oh and the Hornets? Man, they're awesome. Don't have any other words for it.

Jason Boxer said...

Kidd, imo, deserves it. but he's my favorite player, my man crush, and we share names, so i'm no man to make that decision.

and Renton, just to warn you, i might start commenting a lot more cuz i'm staying away from A6 until TRA drops.

and robbz, good question about Silas. wtf happened to that guy?

robbz18 said...

Jason, hell yeah, man. What happened to him? I really think he's better than most of the coaches out there right now.

And if I were Cuban, I'd seriously look into getting him on my team. Silas seems like a people person, someone that you could genuinely like as a person. And for the fragile egos on the Mavs, I think that could be big.

He also doesn't sound like a micro-manager, so I guess he would play with a little more freedom. He really did a great job with the Hornets back then.

First of all: you guys are the best. I will keep on writing, also after the season. Still about basketball, of course, and I already have an idea for the offseason.

Jay: About a6: I'm frustrated, because I don't know what to do: I've always waited for the official album release. Always! But now that it is already there.... haven't downloaded a song yet, and hope I'm 'strong' enough and don't do it at all.

Robbz: about Silas: you might or might not know that his name came up just two weeks ago. Silas himself wanted the Bobcats job more than anything, but they chose Larry Brown over him. He did do a good job with the Charlotte Hornets and Baron Davis (who had great respect for Silas) years ago.
Carlisle will be the next Mavs coach, but a lot of other teams could use him. Chi-town?
If I was Silas, whatever happens, don't go to NY. (not that he's a candidate anyway). Silas was a top rebounder in his days, and the Knicks big men? Not so much! Only Daid Lee gives some night-in, night-out effort.
Keep them comments coming! New blog will be here soon, maybe tomorrow or saturday......
(and I noticed the grammar errors these last couple of blogs, will put more effort in it, because that's just lazyness)

i'm just pretending A6 doesn't exist so i'm not even tempted to download the songs. i deleted the bookmark for it and i'm just listening to all of the older stuff over and over again (not that i didn't do that before) until the album is released.

Does anybody think the Jazz have a shot at all? They definitely need to win both of these home games and if they can steal one in LA i think they'll be in good shape. Game three is hugely important. I think the Jazz can do it, though.

Sucks Spurms took Game 3; but they always would, and they were supposed to. Hornet power!

I like the Jizz, but they won't win. Stern won't let them. The officiating was fucking awful in G2, and I'm sure the Jazz can not win, even if they are the better team.

*spoiler*

What we have of TRA is (imo) 62.5% garbage, and 37.5% good; making it at least better than MB.

Whoa... I never heard anything about Silas considering going to Charlotte. But man, I think that would have been better than hiring the Dark Lord himself. I mean, really, do you want Larry Brown coaching your youngsters? They need someone who doesnt hate rookies! Man, oh, man. THis is gonna set them back a few years. Emeka should get out while he can.

I really think firing Avery was a big mistake. I think the problem with Dallas really is their roster. Dirk is nowhere near a superstar, despite how hard he may try. JOsh Howard seemingly never got over his injury, and was just plain terrible. They traded away Devin Harris, who's the only who could defend the new-school PGs.

I really think Dallas should blow this team up. Keep Josh, trade Dirk and Kidd. But not next season... Not yet. They should see what a full season with Kidd is like, and if they still cant do anything substantial, blow the team up.

The Jazz have been disappointing. Boozer is playing NOTHING like the way he played early on in the season. It's really crazy.

Just posted something about Kobe on my blog. I think it's a cool post, so hopefully you guys will check it out.

-Gerard Himself- said...

lamrock: The Jizz? That's awful holy hell :D
And also to Jay: I really don't think the Jazz have the chance to win it all. They won't win 4 out of the 6 remaining games, I can't see them do it. Like Charles Barkley said: the Jazz needs to run a little bit more, but as he stated (and he was right), Deron tries to do that, but the rest? Not so much. And like Robbz said: what's going on with Boozer? One of the best power forwards out there hasn't shown up yet. The Lakers' big men can defend, but they're not that good right?

Robbz: about Larry Brown: maybe, just maybe, he might be the right coach for the Bobcats. The good and bad thing with a coach like Larry Brown, is that he is more a teacher than a manager. And in the NBA you need a manager (think Byron Scott, Pop, Sloan, Phil Jackson). Since he is coaching young guys, and if they're willing to learn, they have the chance to win some more games next season. Personally, I would've liked it if Silas would get to lead them, and Larry Brown would go out and cooach a huge college team. Again, the man's a teacher......... (checked your Kobe blog, I like it that you give the guy credit, I mean, people can't deny his greatness, not after this season. He earned it)

robbz18 said...

Hahaha. "The Jizz" I dont know whether to cringe or laugh, man...

Yeah, the Jazz aint gonna win it. Boozer has been terrible all postseason long, and Kobe is just on another high right now.

Man, I just dont like Larry Brown... I agree that he would be a great college coach, but in the NBA (where his reputation is tainted) I just dont think he has the respect of players anymore.

I mean, the dude interviewed for another job in the middle of the Finals!! Come on.. I'm sure they could get a better coach somewhere else.

But really, why did they fire Bernie in the first place? He had a thing going and probably couldve taken this group to the playoffs this year.

Love MJ, but he's proving to be a terrible manager so far.

robbz18 said...

And yeah, Kobe deserved that MVP. But more than that, he deserves our respect. I cant stop gushing about how he handled all those challenges.

I think I wrote this with his stint with Team USA in mind, and Im glad Im right.

Jason Boxer said...

The Jazz are victorious!! 3 more to go. This could be a gigantic upset if they win the series. And Boozer had 27 points and 20 rebounds. talk about finally stepping up.

they NEED this next home game. if they don't win this, series over for sure.

and I'm not sure why, but I have always thought of Silas as a talented coach. There's no real way to really grade a coach besides the team's record, and that has a whole lot more to do with the players (Doc Rivers, anyone?). But for some reason, he seems like a guy who knows what he's doing.

-Gerard Himself- said...

Jay, Game 4 coming up, I'm watching!
More Silas news by the way: The Suns are thinking about him replacing D'Antoni.... to be continued!

-Gerard Himself- said...

I bet some of you guys are happy after seeing the Jazz win, right?

Deron Williams = god.
